I saw how you draw Mello and Matt as close to the original as possible and they look amazing! I was wondering if you could draw Near the same way too? (人 •͈ᴗ•͈)
Tumblr media
Sure, though I feel like I didn't really change much from his original design except age him up to his actual age? Mind you: this character is supposed to be 17/18 years old in canon.
But enough with the comparisons now.

What’s your most unpopular DN opinion? (It can be about canon, fanon the fandom)
I don’t even know if you are still around anon, but I promised you an answer, and here it is. Unpopular opinion time! And here’s a really unpopular one: I wish Wammy’s wouldn’t exist and Ohba went in a different direction after L’s death.
I’m probably almost the only one with this opinion. I know many people love the Wammy kids, and I want to make this clear, this is not necessarily about the characters from Wammy’s. I appreciate them, some more, others less. However, you can like a character and still think the story would have been better without them.
First, a few points on why I don’t like the introduction of Wammy’s.
One thing I enjoyed a lot about DN up to L’s death is the lack of overused tropes. For example, DN isn’t L’s story despite him fitting more into the good guy role, L isn’t portrayed as a hero, Light isn’t portrayed as a villain, Misa isn’t the innocent victim who was dragged into this, and neither L nor Light is the chosen one(s), main characters don’t have an extremely outstanding design, and so on. Wammy’s changes this partially. There must be people, qualified ones included, in the entire world that have reasons why they want to stop Kira, but all of Kira’s antagonists originate from the same place – Wammy’s. That’s pretty much the secret-intuition-that-protects-the-world-from-evil trope. It also falls into the chosen one trope because only L’s successors are apparently good enough to put an end to Kira. Also, Near has a rather outstanding design. Having white hair isn’t impossible, but highly unlikely. In addition, he looks like 12 despite being 18 and always wears fucking pajamas instead of normal clothes. Mello has a somewhat outstanding design too, but it’s more the way the dresses. I won’t complain too much about it. Still, compare this to Team Kira’s new additions. Mikami’s and Takada’s designs are way more grounded.
Another trope I find annoying is linking everything to the same two or three people. Every important character that is introduced later in the series has a connection to one of the original main characters (being related, childhood friends, same former mentor, …). In my opinion, that’s just a cheap way to give a new character credit without them doing anything and make them more popular among fans. If the character is well-written enough, things like that are not necessary. Ohba goes hard for this trope with Wammy’s: Near, Mello, and even fucking Matt are all L’s successors, so they have a direct link to him. And, while it’s just a spinoff, and how canon it is is debatable, even the BB murder case goes back to L and Wammy’s. (I know AN wasn’t written by Ohba, but it fits the pattern.) Compare this to Light’s allies. Most Kiras had no previous connection to Light before meeting him. The only exception is Kiyomi after the time skip. In Misa’s case, Kira gave her the revenge she wanted. However, she’s likely still one of many with similar stories. She didn’t know Light before, and Light didn’t know her. Even how Misa got her DN is unrelated to Light and Ryuk. Mikami had to stand entirely on his own feet. He had no direct connection to Light or L whatsoever.
I’m also disappointed that Ohba toned down the realism with Wammy’s. DN wasn’t 100% realistic before either, but there is a drop in it with the introduction of the Wammy’s characters. We go from one rich dude who fights crime mainly for entertainment to an entire training ground for super-intelligent orphans to become the world’s greatest detectives. Then there’s Mello with the missile and ultra-fast healing powers, and Near winning because of magical guessing powers and plot armor. Both are also younger than Light and inexperienced. And while humans aren’t born with special powers in the DN universe and supernatural aspects are limited to the Shinigami and the Shinigami realm, BB has Shinigami eyes for no apparent reason. Technically, these are still connected to the Shinigami within the story, but the explanation given for this is extremely vague and unsatisfying.
The points I’ve listed so far would bother me less if they always would have been a thing or if both sides were treated equally regarding tropes and bullshit. But they are particularly noticeable for Wammy’s characters, while Team Kira is not so much affected.
Also, I liked that before Wammy’s became a thing, L was an extraordinary element. L appeared to be self-made. He even became an important part of law enforcement even though his main motivation wasn’t justice. Before Wammy’s introduction, his death would have had a massive impact on the DN universe because once he is dead, L doesn’t exist anymore and is no longer a secret weapon in difficult cases. Even if Kira is defeated, losing L in the process would be a massive loss. Wammy’s existence reduces L to a replaceable role. If he dies, someone else from the L-factory will take the position. The death of L as a person has almost no impact on the DN universe because L as an entity still exists, and that’s the only thing that counts. No consequences whatsoever. Barely anyone knew how he looked anyway.
I understand why Ohba went with L’s successors as a continuation instead of something else. He was playing the safe card by feeding the consumers something they are already familiar with. Going for different scenarios would be risky and require more effort. However, it could have been more rewarding if executed well. I would have liked a greater variety of enemies for Light and him having to adapt to new dangers. So, here are some scenarios that I would have found more intriguing than the one we got.
The premise of Mello’s arc was interesting; unfortunately, the execution was horrendous. But Light vs a criminal organization that, for example, wants the DN or Kira’s power for themselves isn’t a bad idea. A criminal organization would be a lot more ruthless than L. L needed evidence, while a crime syndicate would immediately shoot Light if he showed up on the list of suspects. And his family would be in danger too.
Or a revenge plot? Something like Kira killed a family member or other loved one (preferably justified, but could also be someone wrongly accused), and a bereaved person wants revenge. Now, this person is on a suicide mission, and Light has to fight against someone who has nothing left to lose. Their own survival is optional, only getting revenge before dying counts.
How about Kira vs a fanatic Kira fan? Someone who thinks Kira isn’t Kira enough anymore and feels they can do better? Maybe this person could make Light’s allies question their loyalty to him. Who are they loyal to, Light or Kira?
A female antagonist would also have potential (but not with Ohba as an author). Light tends to underestimate women. Now, Light faces one as a competent opponent, and he has to take one or more critical hits to realize the danger.
Anyway, the successor arc definitely has its moments, but overall, it is a lot weaker. And in my opinion, these weaknesses are primarily connected to Wammy’s. So, removing it could have been beneficial for the story. At least, that’s my opinion. If you have a different opinion, that’s great. But please, I’m not particularly interested in lengthy discussions about this subject.

Here are some of my thoughts on DN: short stories!
And it's a lot. I'm crossposting this from my reddit account. Spoilers ahead
Book cover
Why does Ryuk look different on the cover? He looks like normal in all the actual stories but on the cover he has a red spot on his chest and red lips (among other things).
I do really like his right bracelet, it reminds me of the handcuffs Light and L had. I'm not sure if it's new but it's cool.
Speaking of the cover, there is 'Death Note' written in shiny letters and I only noticed once I turned my lamp on. That's such a nice detail.
Onto the stories themselves.
C-Kira
When I read the name Yamamoto, I though it was one of Light's friends from the manga, since they have the same name and appearance (spiky black hair and glasses). But apparently they are different characters entirely, which is kinda disappointing even if it doesn't change anything.
I'm bit confused on what's up with Matsuda. He tries to justify actions of C-Kira and I'm not sure where the writers where going with this. Like he was supportive of the original Kira but I kinda thought that ended when he shot Light several times.
I like that Near's hair got a bit longer from last time. Also the tator card towers are insanely cool.
And the way he just pops out of them on page 22 XD.
Tumblr media
When Near recalls the video chat, we see a kid with a striped shirt, who I'm guessing is Matt
Tumblr media
I haven't seen the Relight movies (I'm planning to one day), but I saw L's monster speech and I'm guessing it's based on this scene. The manga is pretty different from it, L is more forward and cold.
It's pretty interesting to hear that L picked Near and Mello because they didn't ask him any questions, just listened. Also bc of their glares.
And if this is the only time Near interacted with L, how does he know his appearence for his finger puppet? Did he see a photo or did he just get a description from someone else?
I can't believe Ryuk got other shinigamis, including the actual King of Death addicted to apples. Good lord.
Also I love how Ryuk refers to king of death as an "old fart". Makes it sound like he's the shinigami's dad XD
Near just tuning in, calling C-Kira a murderer and then signing out was pretty badass. Rip C-Kira, you were okay.
Speaking of C-kira, we actually know really little about them. All we got was they own a bunch of anime figurines.
Tumblr media
I noticed how many bananas Meadra has eaten. Do all shinigami's have a specific food they like? Although all seem to like apples.
I like Near not being sure if he acted like L and how Rester tells him he's L now, it's pretty sweet and adds a bit of humanity to Near.
Also how are the towers holding together? Near's breaking laws of gravity
Tumblr media
Meadra is such a nice friend, bringing Ryuk an apple.
This was a pretty fun story and it's always nice to see Halle Linder.
A-kira
I really like Minoru's design. He looks unique but still natural and his hairstyle is bit more modern compared to Light's.
Ryuk picked Minoru rather than just throwing the death note and waiting for somebody to find it. It's a interesting shift from his first appearence.
I love Ryuk's disappointment when Minoru told him he can't read the rules and demanded translation.
Minoru is so based for just trying to sell the notebook and his plan is really clever.
Ryuk holding the sign while literaly everyone in the studio can't see him is hilarious.
Near looks gorgeous with the long hair. <3 And so does Halle Linder with the shorter hair cut
Is that Donald Trump???!!! What even is this story?!
Tumblr media
I love how Armonia just shows up with his chair and leaves immediately.
Wait, Yotsuba??? I was wondering what the Yotsuba group was actually leading, nice to get a conclusion.
I'm also intrigued that Minoru decided to keep only a fraction of the money, but it was pretty smart and he still got a bunch of money from it.
I can't believe Ryuk met Donald Trump.
In the end, Ryuk writes the name of Minoru in his note book. I thought the rule would kill him immediately? Or is Ryuk obligated to write it?
Anyways, this story was goofy, Minoru was entertainingly smart and I liked it.
Scribbles
I love how insane and fun everyone in this. We need more. Also Sayu has more to do. Yay :D
Why does Light think strawberries are more sexy than apples?
Misa's back!!! I missed her so much.
Her swimsuit is really bland, but Light looks great in the Hawaian shirt. He should wear it more often.
I'm not sure how to feel about Misa getting sexualized in this. I'm fine with fanservice and her being sexy, but I feel like she sometimes gets treated more as a source of fanservice than an actual character.
I noticed she's the one driving the car. And I don't think I ever saw Light drive. This leads me to a conclusion that Light never learned to drive. Headcanon that Misa just drives him around during those 5 years.
Also I live for Misa and Sayu's friendship!!!
Misa making bunny apples for Ryuk is so cute.
Somehow, "Disappointment" makes Misa and Light into a somewhat healthy couple.
In second to last strip, Light somehow pulls L up using only one arm. My boy is strong.
And the last strip, "Debate" depicts Rem holding a glass of wine (?). Since Rem doesn't have a favourite human food (unlike Ryuk, Meadra and Sidoh), maybe she likes to drink wine? Misa seems to enjoy drinking (in that one scene in the anime). Maybe she shared some with her.
L - one day
Watari narrates this like an animal documentary.
It also gives L both really bizarre and really normal traits, like he bathes in a washing machine and can't be bothered to put a shirt on, but he is fond of art galleries and theme parks.
Also L's a pop fan. Love that but I'm bit said we didn't get this in the main series. I'd love to see what interactions with Misa could come from that.
I'm glad to know that L does more than just sit in front of a computer.
L- Wammy's house
I love L, but he looks so weird as a kid. Glad he didn't stay like this forever.
So L came into the orphanage without a name. Did he name himself or did Wammy gave him that name? How do all the kids get their names? Why does Near have a normal name but then we have a guy named Mail?
How did L manage to defeat a group of kids who were trying to beat him (the new kid) up? And judging from what L says, this might be a common thing, so why isn't anyone doing anything about it?
Kids in Wammy's house share bedrooms so I wonder who did Near and Mello live with.
L and Watari's dynamic here is so hilarious.
Overall I'm not really big on this story. I know it's a matter of preference but L feels really overpowered and inhuman here. I kinda prefer when he gets some grounded moments, like his monster speech in Relight movies or even just his reaction to Misa kissing him on the cheek. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not really my thing.
Taro Kagami
This is also a pilot for the series.
I noticed that the shinigami's look more human. I'm glad their designs got changed, I don't like how they look like sexy women with weird faces.
Tumblr media
Taro is so cute! I really like his design.
I like how he just uses the Death note as a regular notebook and accidentally kills someone. It's a pretty common concept in memes about DN so it's nice to see it in a serious story.
I appreciate Taro's reaction to Ryuk and accidentally killing people. It's pretty realistic for a kid like him.
Takagi kinda looks like Raye Penber while Yamanaka's design didn't make it into the series. Its kinda a shame, since it's pretty unique.
Tumblr media
I also like to see Taro's mom getting involved. We never really got any reaction from Sachiko.
The conversation between Yamanaka and Takagi about how they'd use the death note is really interesting. Yamanaka makes a great point on how most people would use it.
I also love him saying that Takagi would have to kill half the world to achieve his harmonious world.
And personality wise, Takagi reminds me a bit of Matsuda.
The death eraser is a cool concept. While it probably would be too overpowered in the main series, I'd love to see what could be done with it.
I'm also intrigued by the author of detective novels. His design is cool as well and I wonder if he somewhat inspired L's character. His deductions were great.
And so we're Taru's, when he figured out Miuro is the second DN owner.
The ending itself is amazing in my opinion. Taro manages to twist the truth just right, so Miuro trusts him while he keeps the original note book. Death note becomes a legend but Taru still has it after all these years. The ambiguity is brilliant.
And older Taru looks great with long hair.
I read on the wiki that Taru might have inspired Mikami and I honestly believe that, but he seems like a combination of both Taru and Miuro.
He gets his long hair from Taru, glasses and fanatism from Miuro (who kept screaming "Die, die, die" while frantically writing names of criminals) and being bullied from both.
This was my favourite story. It flows a bit better than the A and C kira stories and it had some really cool ideas.
Final thoughts
While I'm bit sad we didn't really have any female characters (since DN doesn't really have many and as a woman I'd like to see them) I had fun with this book, the art's great and it's nice to see the pilot, shorter funny comics and what's most of the living cast up to after Light's death.

wammy ponies... I'm working on the adults next muhahaha.. the designs are subject to change but here's my first ideas ^_^
I wanted to say Matt's cutie mark is a little weak compared to near and Mello's which mirror each other, but I have unlucky numbers inside the screen of his game console. And three hearts to symbolize video game lives but also the three impactful moments of his life.
Mello's is a shield and cross, with a black unlucky horse shoe with wings. As he ages the wings on his cutie mark become black, at the time of his death they would be completely changed.
Near's is clearly his signature dice along with a light lucky horseshoe, and a sword. I like the sword and shield symbolism for these two and their marks considering they are two half's of a whole. Not necessarily a broken whole but they are both mirrors of everything the other is not. Mello is the shield that protected near, considering how much work and effort he puts in, and near is the sword that strikes the final blow. Being luckier than mello could ever be.
However when you usually see these two, their cutie marks will be covered up, replaced with their respective Letter. Matt however chooses not to cover his, relying on his fake name to protect him from Kira, though he isn't actively involved in investigating, he just listens to and helps Mello.
I'm realllllyyy excited to keep drawing this au.

In your opinion, how would a fem near, Matt, mello, matsuda, turn out?
I've explored this some in different posts already actually! See links for expansion
Fem!Near design
A bit about Near & Mello (see tags, too)
Rewritten scene of Near returning Mello's photo (+tone shift & take that I'd love. A more Kakegurui-esk portrayal of the women if they were gender swapped)
And also Fem!Matsuda in the back. Not very different, but shorter. Not shorter than Misa but noticeably so next to Light & L (she's the only one genderswapped within the Kira task force to have a clumsy, Kobeni (CSM) type girl to balance L's boldness and Misa & Light's lesbian insanity. She'd also still shoot Light at the warehouse which, like many of her other characteristics, I'd only let happen if it's in place of another woman.)
Matsuda remains very eager to help out & not much changes story wise (at least I haven't come up with things that'd underline her femininity like I have for Light & L, since Matsuda has a pretty 'feminine' personality already. I wouldn't wanna focus on her femininity too much anyway. Much like Kobeni in CSM)
Mello appears more vicious than she does in canon. She just feels kind of evil and vindictive, yet never actually harms Near when she gets the chance. Especially later in the story Mello loses a lot of his snide smirks and I'd like to replace those with boastful looks for his fem counterpart. She'd look very similar to her canon design with perhaps a few more stripes and piercings. I'd maybe wanna give her a bit more tan, too🤔😌 She's compared to a pirate and that's badly what I want to achieve with her.
The linked posts above say a lot about Near already, but I kinda love her & while rewatching Kakegurui for the 4th time this week it came to my attention that english Miri Youbami has similar voice qualities to english Near. Make of that what you will♡
Can't really say I have big plans on changing Matt too much, either. Unlike all other characters (except for L & sooomewhat Misa) she's got long nails. She'd have these square Acrylics that would peak out from the half hand, fuzzy-ended gloves she wears. She'd have long bangs that usually cover her eyes pretty snugly, wherefore she'd always wear her goggles on her head above them. Perhaps I'd give her a more enticing accessory, since she remains the sharp tongued, chill, pro blunt roller. Bell bottoms might be right. But those that aren't as tight around the knees & have pockets for hand hiding.

Who do I feel as though genderbent mello would get girboss treatment
See, I go back and forth on this, because my instinctive reaction is that you are absolutely right. There's the whole implied Catholicism thing (people love to use that as an aesthetic, which, fair, I used to be Catholic we have some banger art and designs), there's the leather and Fashion Choices™, there's the "is a criminal who kills people but isn't The Worst One Here" and there's the "main target of their ire is an unpopular character" all of which are prime traits for fandom girlboss-ification.
The conflict I find myself having, though, is that this character is. Angry. That's kind of his Thing™. And if he were a woman........people really don't like angry women. Especially if they act out about it. If they're lucky, all that happens is they get called "crazy" or "hysterical." But most of the time they get called [insert gendered insult or death threat here]. (Remember when I got harassed multiple times irl for simply dressing up as a fictional character at a con, good times.) A female version of this character would have "conventionally attractive thin young person" to her advantage, and people are kinder to female characters if they fit into that category than if they don't. And, again, a major source of this character's anger involves their misplaced disdain for a character the fandom at large (sadly, incorrectly) does not have a ton of love for. And those things might be enough to override the general fandom distaste for destructive anger in female characters.
I'm going to go into this further in my "almost-genderbent DN" post (which is. it's coming. I just. chronic illness. words.), but I guess it would depend on how unhinged (and, specifically in what ways she is unhinged) the story makes this genderbent version of her. Some types of "unhinged" are seen as delightful or even narratively palatable, and some aren't. Because there is a general-fandom threshold between, "The crimes make her cool™" and "The crimes make her the devil incarnate" and I'm trying to fully parse out where exactly that threshold is. And once I have a more concrete idea of it, all of you will be the first to know. :)
(Another factor in whether or not she gets Girlbossed™ is probably to what extent (if any) genderbending her changes her relationship with Matt. Because they're a pretty popular ship, and if a character choice makes a ship more or less appealing in the eyes of the fandom...historically, that's going to change the general perception of that character.)

Sigma's Birthday should be May 4th
Lemme explain...

Given that Sigma has no designated birthday I have a proposal for a birthdate (or at least a dedicated date) for him...
The greek letter sigma usually comes in two forms. Uppercase (Σ) and lowercase (σ).
Uppercase sigma (Σ) (below) in mathematics is to denote a summation/sum of a collection of numbers. But, unfortunately, there is no value typically associated with that letter.

FASHION ANON HERE hahah I’m so sorry I didn’t see the question until now! Mainly Mello, Near, and Matt but honestly characters like Sayu and Matsuda or even Naomi or Mikami and Takada would also be okay haha! Sorry if the list is too long, you could just narrow it down to the first 3 if you want!
A NOTE FROM PRESENT ME: Omg I found this in my drafts and I'm so sorry, fashion anon. I was planning on finding reference photos and linking them in the more in depth descriptions but I never got around to it. I guess you'll have to use your imagination for this! I'm so sorry it took so long!
Hi fashion anon!! Welcome back and thanks for continuing such a fun prompt!
K this post is MASSIVE so I’m putting all the in-depth descriptions under the cut. Here’s the summaries of my ideas for the main three characters I’ll be doing:
First and foremost, my girl Misa!! Dude, I had such a hard time figuring out what to do with her. Unlike L and Light, who’s styles aged like milk left outside on the sun, Misa’s design is timeless. I legit sat here for a good half hour stressing about how I was gonna do this until I remembered--- she's a MODEL. She can wear ANYTHING. With that, I decided to base her style off of Harajuku Street fashion! I had to go big or go home so as not to disgrace her character lol
I'm doing two different looks for Mello! I always got the impression that his design was supposed to lean edgier and more modern, but his canon outfit is... So weird. (Not nearly as egregious as Matt's vest thing though lol.) He also works with the mob, so I wanted to give him one high-fashion look and then one crime-boss look.
Near was by far the easiest in this group, I didn't feel like I was way out of my depth with him LMAO. Boy enjoys comfort. I’m giving him a cottage-core look in pastels to stick with his canon colour palette (or lack thereof lol), plus some chunky sneakers. Did he even wear shoes to the warehouse? Like bruh, you’re gonna get tetanus.
Here we go!
For Misa:  (small disclaimer though, I’m not super familiar with the subculture, so I’m basing all the looks off of individual pieces rather than sweeping statements about the movement as a whole)
The one commonality I’ve observed in Harajuku--- and the only comment I’ll make of the movement as a whole--- is that “more is more!” The more layers of outrageous clothes/accessories, the better! Here’s a couple articles I read about it in case you want to fact check outside of this!
First I'd give her two-toned hair (platinum blonde/black) split right down the middle. The styling options are endless, you can go from high-fashion to punk/goth in a heartbeat. She wouldn't be Misa without her pigtails, so if she was modeling for more editorial looks they can tie them into tighter buns.
More intense eyeliner looks are very in nowadays--- ALSO the graphic eyeliner trend would give her endless possibilities
For more casual wear, she's already THE og E-girl, so I'll just list a bunch of accessories that I think would look good on her instead of being redundant with styling
Give her those kitty-ear headphones too (and a gamer chair, ring light, and LED strip lights bc might as well oh god Misa stay away from tiktok PLS)
I saw these fingernail rings that would def suit her goth aesthetic (note from present me, they were literally silver nail covers that had a ring you'd wear above the last knuckle)
She's definitely the type to get long acrylic nails (I'm jealous of anyone who can wear them comfortably, I'd just gnaw them off out of annoyance) with intricate designs. It'd be cool if she got some stained glass window/church imagery inspired ones to fit the themes of the show
Other than that, I scrolled through images of all her canon outfits and they all hold up (except maybe ditch the horizontal striped shirts if you want to leave y2k territory)
For Mello:
Might be controversial, but I'm changing up his haircut from the bob to an undercut/bowl cut like this photo. I think it still captures the energy of his original design.
Then I'd give him these Balenciagas with studded heels (no reference I'm so sorry.)
Bringing back his leather pants in a deep purple
For the crime-boss look:
I wanted to include his weird affinity for fur-lined hoods on his jackets. We could change the fur lining to a straight up feather boa.
With that look the bowl cut I gave him earlier might be too out of place, so I'd give him just an undercut like this here.
There ya go. A young mafia leader with STYLE. Both routes are pretty ostentatious, but man's so dramatic already he can pull it off lol
For Near:
I think his hairstyle's pretty timeless so I'd leave it as is and resist the urge to give everyone a mullet
Alternatively, Braided-Ponytail!Older-Near
I'd give him a pastel-filled wardrobe to stick closer to his canon colour palette (or lack thereof lol)
Lots of baggy sweaters and several cute pairs of overalls!
Then lastly I’d give him a small collection of chunky sneakers so he’s not in agony from stepping on legos all day
Tadaaa!
Sidenote, he’d def be the type to wear ankle high socks with Nike slides and I would allow him and only him to do so
(note from present me: sorry Near's section is so short! I had planned to expand on it later :''D)
If I had time I'd give Matt a sports luxe look and you bet the first thing I'd do is throw out that weird fuzzy vest thing lol

For the character ask: L 🙂
ask me!
ohh, nice. thank you sm 💖
favorite thing about them
how he's not some sort of innocent hero of the story that just wants to save the world, how he only takes cases that challenge and intrigued him. i could say that his unprofessionalism and hypocrisy are my least favorite thing about him, but those are what makes him interesting for me.
least favorite thing about them
hmm, when he bought a god damn skyscraper for a hq with less than 10 people? that's just not it, i'm sorry.
favorite line
"tell me light, from the moment you were born has there ever been a point where you actually told the truth?" idk why but this line lives in my head rent free after i finished watching the anime.
brOTP
lawmassacre! naomi and him made great team, he trusts her and she trusts him to a point where the familiarity of that trust leads her to death. i think they will be nice buddies, kicking down the stairs aside. (i ship them romantically too tho)
OTP
oh come on, it's definitely lawlight. they live my head rent, needs, and entertainment free. they just fit each other like puzzles. there's nothing i can say other than they're soulmates and i can talk about them for DAYS.
nOTP
with near. they're a rarepair but i saw them around sometimes. idk the age gap is too big and it's just...no 😕. also with mello or matt too.
random headcanon
he enjoys durian and couldn't care less about eating them while working with the task force and light. no one but matsuda can tolerate the smell.
unpopular opinion
hmm, this is hard bcs i don't even have a popular opinion about him. maybe this one : i don't like taking first!L seriously. it's fun to speculate or make headcanons out of it, but for me it's just a character design change.
song i associate with them
five by sleeping at last and your world will fail by les friction
favorite picture of them
i hate to say it but
Tumblr media
he looks beautiful in here i am SO SORRY 😭
and this too
Tumblr media
i love his little smile 🥺

matt and near for 001 and yes im the last anon
when I started shipping it if I did:
I don’t remember, but I basically liked the ships as soon as I saw it, haha. I just thought, “Yes, that’s what I want for Near”
my thoughts:
The fact that we never see them interact makes it better, actually. It’s fun to think about how their dynamic could be, and it’s a nice change to the usual very dramatic DN ships where you can so easily over-analyse scenes…. I mean, you can probably make Natebit pretty dramatic very quickly too, since the thing that connects Near and Matt is Wammy’s House & especially Mello. But that’s not what I usually go for myself.
What makes me happy about them:
Just how chill their relationship could be! They would probably almost never argue, or if they’d argue, it would be about inane, nerdy stuff. It’s just a very cosy but still interesting ship.
What makes me sad about them:
Well, Matt died. And there’s no way to guess how Near felt about him but he was obviously surrounded by death, and I think a lot of his storyline is about loss. Always thought Near tried to honour the memory of the Wammy’s kids who died, and just thinking about how lonely Near must felt hurts a lot.
things done in fanfic that annoys me:
I don’t like it when Near is disrespectful towards Matt for no reason. I don’t know, I just think that a lot of people misinterpret Near and his reasons for disliking certain characters so openly
things I look for in fanfic:
Hmmm, not sure, but I definitely like fics where they have a fun dynamic with lots of banter
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
Matt with Mello, but I don’t think I ship anyone else with Near. Nearlymellodramattic is cool too, though (doesn’t really count, does it)
My happily ever after for them:
They develop and design video games together for fun, but then they become actually successful and realise that it makes them way happier than crime solving. And that’s what they do for the rest of their (long!) lives!
who is the big spoon/little spoon:
Usually Near, which surprised Matt. When he first tried to cuddle him, Near just flipped him over and pulled him into a tight embrace
what is their favorite non-sexual activity:
They have a YouTube channel about video game theories and conspiracies & just coming up with topics to discuss is one of their fave pastime activities

I have a kind of internal conflict seeing the "Alphabet Detectives" with facial hair, on the one hand it is logical because of their ages (18-25), obviously they are hairy, because also their hygiene is not their first priority (ew) , but it still contrasts with the cleanliness of the original designs, everyone looks between 16-20 (Near is the biggest victim, I thought he was 12 until just 2 years ago).
I really want to ask you for a commission, just wait until my savings stop disappearing and I'll send an email qwq
I understand that conflict :'D I had the epiphany of them all probably growing a beard at one point or another and it's really difficult to go back now. Think about it. They all have facial hair if they don't shave and I only see Mello being concerned about his appearance. Matt is wayyy too lazy to shave regularly, come on. And he for sure doesn't care of he looks scruffy. Near is probably in a constant struggle between "I hate that scriggly feeling on my face" and "I REALLY don't wanna shave AGAIN".
I don't feel bad about changing their original design if it's for the sake of realism, characterisation or storytelling so here's 15 y/o Mello & Matt early in L.A., homeless, maybe living in an abandoned trailer or something, hungry, desperate for a job:
Tumblr media
Now that I think about this - maybe it's a sign of prosperity for Mello he can grow out his hair again later. Every time he looks at a mirror he sees his hair as a symbol of success in surviving (almost) alone and unsupervised as a teen in a foreign country.

I think the recent uprising of Near posts has really made me appreciate the character more, he's a pretty neat dude actually! I guess I've always kinda overlooked him because Mello is much more boisterous, I was still torn about L's death and because he really does resemble L a lot which puts him at an immediate disadvantage because now he has to prove that he's 'worthy of being his own person', kinda. Do you think he might have been more popular if he had a more unique, less L-ish design?
Honestly I didn’t really like Near at all my first time through the series way back in the day when I just watched the anime! I think that’s a shame now, because after I read the manga recently I completely changed my mind, and Near became one of my top faves.
I think Near sometimes gets overlooked for several reasons:
1- he had to replace L, and a lot of people missed the fun of the first arc’s fast-paced, intimate rivalry between L and Light. L is a beloved character and the series’ writing is at its best during L’s half of Death Note, so it was a very tough act for Near to follow.
2- Mello is always stirring up shit and moving all over the place, whereas Near acts pretty stoic and does lots of sitting and playing with toys. People often see this as Near being kind of apathetic and boring in comparison to Mello, but I’d honestly argue that Near displays a lot more genuine feeling and care toward other people than Mello does! Mello has very dramatic/extra schemes and occasionally hilarious facial expressions and such, but he also hardly bats an eye when he’s murdering innocent people or his cronies are dropping dead all around him. The one time in the manga that Mello truly outdoes Near emotionally is in that first scene when they’re little kids, in my opinion. Mello’s fun because of his dramatic plans and his inferiority complex, but I’d say Near’s actually got a lot of interesting plans as well, plus a much greater depth of emotion and compassion for others.
3- I don’t think the anime does Near’s character justice at all, to be honest; it’s way more apparent to me in the manga that he’s funny and full of personality and not just a lesser version of L. We get more in-depth scenes with him and his hobbies and humour and philosophies, and he doesn’t come off nearly as poker-faced and blase about everything. Anyone who’s just watched the anime is kinda missing out on a lot of Near’s charm, I’d say.
4- I also think Near’s overlooked a bit by fans because his design makes people write him off as less crush-worthy / shippable than the other characters. He looks pretty childish and acts very unsensual. People LOVE shipping rivals, so I’d imagine his relationship with Mello would definitely be the second most popularly shipped one in the fandom (after Lawlight) if say his design and quirks had been swapped with Matt’s or something. As it is now, there are waaaay fewer Meronia fics than MattxMello fics out there, even though Matt barely existed at all in either the manga or anime. Nothing against MattxMello, they’ve got their own cute dynamic, too… but I do think that’s a shame, because Near’s definitely one of the best written, most complex characters in the series!

Dakota Johnson Closed Hers, but Some People Love the Gaps in Their Teeth
For most of her life, Madison Krause refused to smile with her mouth open. “I felt like a hillbilly, because I had this huge gap between my teeth,” Krause told The Daily Beast. Her friends made jokes about what they could fit in between the space. Krause’s mother refused to let her daughter get braces, saying having the space built “character.”
Today, Krause is a 22-year-old law student in New York, and she’s grateful for her mother’s stubbornness. “When I got to college, I realized it was a big part of who I was and, along with my red hair, really made me stand out,” she said. Krause even called her Instagram handle @GapToothGinger to call attention to her features.
Until recently, Krause could count Dakota Johnson as an ally in her cause. But unfortunately, per an actual Page Six headline that ran last week, “Dakota Johnson’s gap in her teeth is gone, devastating fans.”
The 50 Shades of Grey actress, who once gamely let Vanity Fair staff stuff over $1000 in cash in between her incisors, will no longer feel the same air between her teeth.
“The fact that this is a newsworthy event in our world right now is pretty Chaka Khan to me,” Johnson deflected when asked about the new look on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
The actress went on to say she had a permanent retainer glued behind her teeth as a teenager, which has caused her “neck problems” as an adult. “My orthodontist decided it would be a good idea to take it off to see if my jaw sort of expanded, and it helped me,” she said. “And my gap closed by itself, and I’m really sad about it, too.”
There may be hope for Johnson yet, as she will get a replacement retainer. “It’s going to come back,” she pledged to those in mourning. “The world of dentistry is so advanced.”
So advanced, in fact, that dentists aren’t just closing spaces in between teeth, but they are making them, too.
“There have been numerous times that patients have come in wanting gaps between their front teeth,” Dr. Ramin Tabib of NYC Smile Design told The Daily Beast. “One reason is because somehow they closed it at some point, and now they want it back.”
But there are other gapless wonders who head to the dentist in search of a hole they never had to begin with. “There are patients now who consider adding a little space because it’s trendy,” Dr. Tabib said. “The Madonna look, I guess.”
Though dentists could theoretically create a space by shaving off sides of the teeth, Dr. Tabib said that is not the “ideal way” to get a gap. “If you take part of the tooth away, you’re not going to ever get it back,” he said.
Dr. Elisa Mello, Dr. Tabib’s wife and practice partner, recommends patients opt for orthodontics like clear aligners, or Invisalign, which are transparent plastic braces that shift teeth together or apart.
“[Your top set of teeth] is a big U-shape,” Dr. Mello explained. “If you want a space in the center, you have to make the U a lot bigger. It not only gives you a gap, but it makes your smile look really full, too, which is always pleasing.”
Dr. Victoria Veytsman, who runs Cosmetic Dental Studios in New York and Beverly Hills, wrote in an email that she would be “reluctant to create a space in natural healthy tooth enamel.” But she has reshaped teeth by adding veneers, or custom porcelain shells, a “handful” of times, mostly for actors or models trying to alter their appearance.
Veneers can be pricey, costing $2800 to $4200 per tooth. Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist Matt Nejad, DDS, once had a contract with a talent agency. He doled out services to models for a slight discount. Over the course of three years, Dr. Nejad saw “two or three” women who wanted to give themselves tooth gaps.
“I was shocked by that request, because one of the big reasons people went to cosmetic dentists in the first place was to fix spaces, so it was interesting to see people who didn’t have a gap wanting one,” Dr. Nejad said. He granted their wishes with Invisalign, which starts around $3,500.
Studies show that people associate conventionally “unattractive” features like snarled teeth with lower intelligence and being unlikeable (blame the Wicked Witch of the West.) To combat this, Dr. Nejad suggests that gapped smiles be otherwise straight and pearly white.
“If everything else is aligned and the only thing that’s catching your attention is the gap, then you’re in the category of that desirable look,” the dentist said. “What you don’t want are teeth that are rotated, flared out, yellowed, and gapped. Then it just looks like you really need dentistry.”
He also recommends keeping the distance between front teeth “small,” ideally two millimeters across. “Your front tooth is about 8 millimeters wide, give or take, so you want the gap to be about a quarter of the size of a tooth, or less.”
Dr. Nejad issued a warning to anyone thinking of pulling a reverse Dakota Johnson: “This isn’t a huge concern, but food does get stuck in the gap,” he said. “It’s also not uncommon for the space to give a different sound to your speech, because more air will pass through there. It’s a thing you can usually learn to work with, but it’s a caveat.”
Most dentists agreed that they would rather have their patients leave with spacious set of teeth than a crowded mouth. “When you’re born with a gap in your front teeth, it’s a good sign that your arch development is ideal,” Dr. Tabib explained. “Your airways are open, you can breathe better, you can sleep better.”
One Chicago-based model who goes by GG (or @Gap_ToothGoddess on Instagram), has always had a space in between her teeth. She was in good company: so did her mother, brother, grandmother, aunts, and uncles.
“I was never going to change it,” GG told The Daily Beast. She felt especially emboldened after watching Danielle Evans win America’s Next Top Model in 2006, gap and all. “It was like an embrace,” GG said. “The confidence I already had boosted from there.”
GG is less enthused with the idea of dentists adding spaces to perfect teeth. “It’s like, I was born with this! This made me who I am,” she said. “Getting a gap put in between teeth takes the uniqueness out of it. It just looks too ‘put there’ as opposed to natural.”
